Treen refers to small, functional or decorative wooden household objects made before the widespread use of plastics and modern manufacturing, often produced by hand turning on a lathe.

These measures were typically turned from dense, fine-grained hardwoods such as boxwood, fruitwood, or lignum vitae to ensure durability and precise volumetric capacity for compounding medicines.

Authentic pieces generally display characteristic tool marks from hand-turning, a warm patina developed through handling and age, and natural shrinkage or wear consistent with nineteenth-century use.

Small objects like apothecary measures add warmth and historical texture when displayed singly or in groups on open shelving, mantelpieces, or as part of a curated tablescape.

Preserve boxwood items by keeping them away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes, occasionally treating the surface with microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain without damaging the historic patina.
