Games tables gained significant popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries as parlour pastimes became a central social activity for the affluent classes, leading to specialised furniture designs for chess, cards, and backgammon.

These pieces typically feature solid hardwood frames of mahogany or walnut, finished with elaborate wood veneers, geometric marquetry, and intricate crossbanding using contrasting timbers.

Authenticity is determined by examining hand-cut dovetails, traditional joinery, natural timber ageing, subtle irregularities in hand-inlaid veneers, and the type of secondary woods used in the interior construction.

Position the piece as a focal point in a study or drawing room, allowing its intricate surface work to contrast with minimalist modern seating or neutral architectural backgrounds.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels, keep the furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and periodically apply high-quality beeswax to nourish the polished timber surface.
