Door porters, or heavy door stops, became popular in the 19th century during the Victorian era as larger homes with multiple rooms and draughty hallways required functional items to keep heavy wooden doors open.

They were predominantly manufactured using sand-cast brass, iron, or bronze, often featuring lead filling in the base to provide the necessary weight to hold open heavy doors.

Preservation generally involves dusting with a soft cloth and avoiding harsh abrasive cleaners or chemical polishes that strip away the desirable historical patination accumulated over decades.

These pieces function both practically and decoratively, and can be placed in a hallway or entryway to anchor a traditional or eclectic interior scheme while serving its original purpose.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit heavy weight, traditional sand-casting imperfections, natural tarnishing or patination, and construction methods consistent with Victorian foundry work rather than modern hollow reproductions.
