Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This substantial Victorian birdcage or aviary, dating from around 1900, functions as a striking decorative object in a home. The piece consists of a domed wirework cage constructed from polished brass, featuring a small door opening on the left side, horizontal perches, and an internal row of dark feeder cups suspended on metal holders. Beneath the cage sits a polished copper tray with a deep rounded basin, supported by a grey wrought iron stand that incorporates curved scrollwork legs ending in rounded scroll feet, central cross-bracing, and metal brackets securing the basin rim. Measuring 173 cm high by 80 cm wide and 80 cm deep, the standing cage makes a strong visual impact within an interior space. It suits placement on a timber floor in an empty corner or a sunlit conservatory, adding a warm metallic finish and architectural interest to the room.

FAQs

Large free-standing bird cages and aviaries gained widespread popularity during the nineteenth century as decorative parlour and conservatory additions in European homes.

Historical examples feature brass or iron wirework domes, hand-formed copper basin bases, and forged wrought iron legs to provide structural stability and resilience.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished metal joints, heavy copper trays with natural patination, and hand-forged scrollwork on the iron base rather than uniform modern welds.

Decorative aviaries function well in sunrooms, hallways, or living room corners as sculptural statements, or as unique plant stands displaying house plants and trailing foliage.

Dust the metal wirework regularly using a dry soft brush, and protect the copper basin with microcrystalline wax to maintain the metal finish and slow down oxidisation.
