Pair of antique Staffordshire flat back figures on horseback being a ‘going to market’ subject and ‘returning home’, male and female horse riding pair in period costume sitting on a white horse surrounded by gold leaf decoration and gold leaf writing to the bases.

In perfect original condition, no cracks, chips or repairs.

Staffordshire flatbacks are earthenware pottery ornaments produced in England during the 19th century, designed with a flattened unglazed back to sit flush against a fireplace mantelpiece.

These figures were cast in press moulds using local Staffordshire clay, fired, covered in a lead glaze, and subsequently hand-painted with overglaze enamel colours and gilt detailing.

Authentic Victorian pieces feature press-mould seams, fine crazing in the lead glaze, small air release holes, and unglazed flat backs showing signs of natural age and dust accumulation.
