Parian Ware “Fox & Rabbit” Centerpiece Dish, England, C. 1850

19th century
Description

An outstanding example of mid-Victorian Parian ware: a vividly modeled fox crouches on a hollow log, beneath which a rabbit seeks shelter. Framed by an oval border of richly detailed foliage—leaves, acorns and berries in deep relief—this unglazed, creamy-white porcelain dish beautifully mimics sculpted marble.

Unmarked, but the quality of modeling and the choice of an animalier subject clearly link it to Copeland or Minton, pioneers of English Parian. The composition echoes Pierre-Jules Mêne’s famed bronze Chasse au Lapin (1833), a motif widely adapted by Victorian ceramicists.

Diameter: 30 cm

Depth: 24 cm

Height: 16 cm

Weight: 1 907 g

Condition.

Two minute rim chips (one on the front edge, one underneath) have been discreetly stabilized; otherwise no cracks or losses. Relief and surface remain exceptionally crisp.

A rare large Parian centerpiece, perfect for aficionados of 19th-century animal sculpture and English porcelain.

Shipped fully tracked and insured.

Shipping cost includes labour, packaging, and postage.

Please carefully review the accompanying photographs, as they form an integral part of this description. Feel free to ask any questions.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Parian ware is a type of unglazed biscuit porcelain developed around 1842 by Mintons in Staffordshire, England. Named after Paros, the Greek island famed for its white marble, it was formulated to imitate carved marble at a more accessible production scale.

Parian ware is composed of a ceramic body with a high proportion of feldspar, which vitrifies during firing to create a smooth, semi-translucent finish. Liquid slip is poured into plaster moulds, allowing detailed sculptural elements to be produced without requiring a surface glaze.

Authentic Parian pieces feature a distinctive marble-like texture with a subtle sheen, unlike flat plaster or high-gloss glazed porcelain. Look for crisp molded details, maker marks from prominent English potteries, and natural signs of age such as gentle surface accumulation in recessed areas.

A white Parian centrepiece can be displayed as a standalone focal object on a dark wood sideboard, dining table, or mantelpiece. Its monochrome plaster-like aesthetic contrasts with contemporary neutral palettes and textured foliage.

Because Parian porcelain is unglazed, dust should be removed regularly using a soft brush. For deeper cleaning, use warm water with a mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemicals or prolonged immersion that could compromise delicate relief features.
