Georgian Oak and Elm Tripod Occasional Table

18th century
Description

Tripod tables are numerous and most are unremarkable. Occasionally, however, along comes one that sets itself apart and this little table is one of those.

The single piece oak top has a milled edge which slopes inwards and is supported on a beauifully drawn oak baluster column with ring turning to its top and base. Even the elm block to the underside of the top is a joy!

The elm legs, simply shaped, extend beyond the diameter of the top which gives the piece greater stability and appeal. Beauifully proportioned and superbly patinated with great variation and intensity of colour.

English, circa 1770- 1800.

This 18th century Georgian occasional table combines an elm and oak construction finished in a warm brown colour with a rich patina. The single piece circular top has an inward-sloping milled edge, supported by a turned baluster column featuring ring turnings at the top and base. Below, three simple splayed tripod legs extend past the top's diameter, meeting at a central block. Measuring 66 cm high, 39 cm wide and 39 cm deep, the table stands on three scrolled feet with visible grain variation across the timber. Placed beside an armchair or at the end of a sofa in a living room, the table provides a practical surface for holding a cup of tea, a small lamp or a book. Its compact size allows it to fit neatly into corners or small spaces within a hallway, study or bedroom, serving as a functional accent piece in daily use.

A Georgian tripod table typically features a circular top supported by a single turned central stem and three out-swept legs. Developed in the eighteenth century, these versatile pieces were designed to be portable and were commonly utilised as candle stands or wine tables.

Craftsmen predominantly used native hardwoods such as oak, elm, walnut, and mahogany. The central stem was turned on a lathe, while the three legs were joined to the base of the column using dovetail joints, often secured with iron plates for added structural integrity.

Authentic pieces display signs of hand-craftsmanship, including hand-planed undersides, slight asymmetry due to timber shrinkage over centuries, and original dovetail construction where the legs meet the central column block.

These compact tables serve as functional accents placed next to a reading armchair, beside a sofa, or within a quiet corner to hold a small lamp, drink, or book, bridging traditional craft with contemporary spaces.

Preserve the natural wood patina by applying a high-quality clear beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the table away from direct heat sources such as radiators and direct sunlight to prevent timber warping or splitting.
