This pair of nineteenth-century English Victorian Staffordshire pottery spill vases depicts standing sheep crafted from glazed earthenware. Each figure displays a granulated fleece texture, a painted grassy base with a central stream, and a tree trunk spill vase finished in green with a pink interior. The matching animals are arranged as a symmetrical pairing designed for interior display. Measuring 13 cm high, 11 cm wide, and 7 cm deep, these decorative earthenware pieces suit placement on a mantelpiece within an English Country House setting. Figures of this type recall memories of rural life during the Victorian period, serving as traditional interior ornaments.

Spill vases were 19th-century ceramic holders designed to sit on a mantelpiece, used to store thin wood splints or paper spills for transferring fire from the hearth to lamps or pipes. Staffordshire potteries produced these functional and decorative animal-themed figures extensively throughout the Victorian era.

These figures were typically press-moulded from earthenware clay, hand-painted with lead-glazed finishes, and featured textured fleece created using finely granulated ceramic particles or shredded clay applied prior to firing.

Authentic Victorian pieces often feature unglazed flat backs, small air release holes on the base, minor paint variations from hand-application, and natural age-related crazing within the glaze finish.

Position a matching pair symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or bookshelf to add texture, historic narrative, and classic English country aesthetic to a interior space.

Clean gently using a soft, dry brush or a slightly damp microfibre cloth to avoid lifting cold-painted details, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or total submersion in water.
