A 19thC miniature portrait of a young lady handpainted on a porcelain plaque c1850. The oval image depicts a young lady in Empire style dress, in fashion from c1820, with an open neck, puff sleeves and a bustline waist. The young lady is significantly bejewelled with a sumptuous necklace, hair adornments and gilt and pearl additions to the dress. The face and hair style are very reminiscent of the known images of Empress Josephine of France, though this might be an idealised depiction her when very young. The jewels do suggest that this is an important personage. Framed in a black lacquered wooden frame, with gilt slip and gilded oval mount. Accurately and finely painted, and in excellent condition.
Image dimensions 8cm x 6.5cm.
