Brownfield Stoneware Game Pie Dish With Bird And Fern Decoration, Staffordshire 1875

£350    $467    €416
Victorian Brownfield Stoneware Game Pie Dish with Bird Finial and Fern Relief Decoration, Dated 1875

A rare and impressive 19th-century Brownfield stoneware oval game dish, dated September 1875. This beautifully crafted piece is moulded in high relief with intricate depictions of game birds, feathers, and fern foliage, extending across the lid and sides. The surface is richly textured, and the elegant oval form is typical of game and pâté serving dishes popular during the Victorian period.

The lid is surmounted by a sculptural finial modelled as a partridge or pheasant resting among detailed vegetation, enhancing the three-dimensional quality of the design. The exterior retains the warm buff colour of biscuit-fired stoneware, giving a soft, matte texture, while the interior is fully glazed in a glossy pale yellow, making it practical for serving food as well as decorative use.

The base is impressed with the Brownfield mark alongside a date code corresponding to September 1875. Brownfield, based in Cobridge, Staffordshire, was renowned for producing fine stoneware and earthenware throughout the 19th century, noted for the precision and artistry of their moulded designs.

This highly decorative Victorian serving dish would originally have been used to present game pies, but today it makes a beautiful rustic centrepiece, storage vessel, or ornamental kitchen accent. The combination of skilled modelling, naturalistic subject matter, and historical craftsmanship makes it an exceptional addition for collectors of English ceramics, Aesthetic Movement pottery, or antique stoneware.
