FAQs

A Staffordshire spill vase is a type of 19th-century ceramic figure featuring an integrated hollow tube designed to hold thin wooden spills, which were used to transfer flames from a fireplace to light candles or pipes.

These pieces were typically cast in earthenware molds, hand-painted with ceramic colours under or over the glaze, and often highlighted with gilt detailing before being fired in coal-burning kilns.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit crazing in the glaze, vent holes on the underside or back, hand-painted brushwork with period pigments, and earthenware bodies rather than modern porcelain or resin.

They make striking focal points when displayed on mantelpieces, open bookshelves, or enclosed glass cabinets, contrasting sharply against modern minimalist decor to add historical character.

Dust gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid submerging in water or using chemical cleaning agents, as the historic overglaze paints and delicate gilt highlights can easily be damaged.
