FAQs

Dinner gongs became popular in large country houses and shooting lodges during the Victorian era to announce formal meal times to guests residing in expansive estates.

Authentic period gongs typically feature a cast or hammered brass disc suspended from a mounted wooden backplate, often crafted from solid oak, with metal hanging fixtures.

Authentication relies on examining the casting methods, natural patina of the brass, hand-cut screw heads, and construction wear consistent with late 19th-century manufacturing techniques.

This piece works effectively as a focal point on a hallway or study wall, pairing well with dark wood panelling, textured walls, and traditional architectural elements.

Maintenance requires dusting the wood with a dry cloth and occasionally treating it with suitable wax, while preserving the natural brass patina by avoiding harsh chemical polishes.
