Victorian brass door stops gained popularity during the 19th century as coal-fired central heating led to wider use of interior doors that needed to remain open or closed securely. Foundries utilised sand-casting techniques to produce heavy, decorative figures ranging from animals and flora to mythological motifs.

These pieces were typically crafted using traditional sand-casting methods with heavy yellow brass or bronze alloys. Often featuring an iron core or weighted base for added stability, the metal was hand-finished with chased detailing and mounted onto a shaped plinth.

Authentic items display the characteristic weight, sand-cast texture, and natural patina associated with 19th-century metalwork. Examination of the underside often reveals casting marks, hand-filed seams, and wear patterns consistent with age rather than modern mass production.

This piece can function effectively as a functional door holder or as a sculptural decorative object on a bookshelf or mantelpiece. The warm metallic tone complements both traditional and modern schemes, adding historical weight and texture to a room.

Preservation requires dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that strip the historical patina. If cleaning is necessary, mild soap and water with immediate drying will protect the surface from oxidisation.
