Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 1920 Art Deco set of twelve knife rests comes housed in a fitted presentation box covered in a burgundy exterior. The interior features a white satin lid lining with a gold-embossed maker's emblem of a classical head, alongside a rich crimson velvet base that holds the twelve matching pieces securely in individual channels. Each rest comprises a clear cylindrical glass central bar capped at both ends with solid yellow geometric Bakelite terminals, creating a striking contrast of materials and colours. The hinged case fastens with metal catches and hardware, and includes water damage on the exterior covering. The individual knife rests measure 10 cm in length. This tabletop set serves well on a dining room sideboard or table during formal dinner parties, adding a period accent to traditional and modern tablescapes alike when entertaining guests.

FAQs

Knife rests were used during formal dining service to prevent used cutlery from touching and staining the linen tablecloth between courses. During the Art Deco era of the 1920s and 1930s, makers incorporated modern synthetic materials like Bakelite to create functional table accessories featuring bold geometric shapes.

Art Deco knife rests often combined early thermosetting plastics, such as Bakelite or Catalin, with clear moulded glass or acrylic cylinders and metal core rods. These sets were typically sold in custom-fitted presentation boxes lined with velvet and silk.

Authentic Bakelite pieces lack visible mould seams on the plastic components, display heavy density relative to modern plastics, and develop a distinct patina or slight colour shift over time. Testing with gentle friction or warm water releases a characteristic chemical scent unique to phenolic resins.

Vintage knife rests can be displayed inside a glass cabinet or arranged on a sideboard top alongside period glassware. They can also be integrated into modern dinner party tablescapes to add historical character to place settings.

Clean Bakelite and glass components using a soft microfibre cloth slightly dampened with warm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals or submersion. Store the pieces in their original fitted case away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity to prevent discoloration or warping.
