This ceramic figurine depicts two horses on an oval moulded base, created in the 1920 style. Modelled in porcelain with an underglaze painted finish, the piece features a white body decorated in shades of blue and grey, showing a horse grazing beside another standing forward with a patterned saddle detail. The base rests on a flat surface while the glazed surface reflects the light, and a number is positioned on the rear. Measuring 19 cm high, 170 cm wide, 7 cm deep, the object sits appropriately upon a mantelpiece in an English Country House interior setting, bringing an equine decorative accent to domestic surfaces.

Blue and white ceramics originated in East Asia and became widely popular across Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, leading to extensive production of decorative animal figurines and tableware.

These items are generally crafted from fine porcelain or earthenware, hand-moulded or slip-cast, decorated with underglaze cobalt oxide pigment, and finished with a clear protective glaze before kiln firing.

Look for underglaze makers marks or stamps on the unglazed underside, evidence of hand-painted brushwork rather than printed decals, and fine craquelure or age-appropriate wear to the base.

Place the figurine on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table alongside brass accents, stacked art books, or greenery to add texture and classic pattern to a contemporary space.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth or gentle soft-bristled brush, and avoid submerging in water or using harsh chemicals that could damage original glaze finishes or delicate repairs.
