FAQs

The Aesthetic Movement emerged in the late nineteenth century, promoting art for arts sake and rejecting heavy Victorian ornamentation in favour of simpler, reform-inspired designs often influenced by Japanese and Gothic art.

Cabinet makers typically used dense native and exotic timbers such as oak, walnut, and ebonised wood, frequently incorporating brass hardware and simple structural joinery.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-carved details, traditional joinery methods such as mortise and tenon, patination consistent with age, and sometimes maker marks or design stamps from reform manufacturers.

Pairing historical timber pieces with modern minimalist decor or placing them within a maximalist scheme creates a striking contrast that highlights the craftsmanship and rich texture of the wood.

Maintain antique timber by keeping it out of direct sunlight, avoiding extreme humidity fluctuations, and periodically applying specialist beeswax to nourish the finish without using modern silicone polishes.
