Description

A rare and important Barr, Flight and Barr Worcester Porcelain Ice Pail, Cover & Liner decorated by William Billingsley c.1808-1811. Each side of the Ice Pail adorned with solidly gilded satyr mask and horn handles. Both the front and reverse of the pail are painted in Billingley’s distinctive style with a group of garden flowers, both the sides and lid are decorated with different floral specimens.

Impressed crowned BFB marks, underside of the lid also with printed mark referring to Royal patronage and Coventry Street address

Billingsley arrived at Worcester in 1808 - during the Barr, Flight and Barr period. He initially worked as a flower painter and a small number of finely decorated services are a tribute to his genius.

Pieces from a similar service are illustrated by John Sandon, The Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain (1993), colour plate 9. These pieces are from an exceptional service painted by Billingsley with single flowers. A pair of dishes from the same service are in the Museum of Worcester Porcelain.

Condition: Professional restoration to a chip to one corner of the base. Break through finial re-attached and invisibly restored back in place. Band of gold to the front and one side re-gilded. Chip to one of the Satyr's horns restored and re-gilded.
