FAQs

A ceramic tobacco jar from the 19th century is a lidded container specifically designed to keep loose leaf tobacco moist and fresh before the widespread use of manufactured cigarettes.

These jars were typically thrown from local clay, glazed for moisture resistance, and decorated using transfer printing or hand-painted enamel details.

Authentication involves examining the potting techniques, crazing of the glaze, base markings, and the presence of period-correct transferware motifs characteristic of regional potteries like Bristol.

An antique jar functions effectively as a decorative accent on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or desk, adding historical texture and graphic interest to a room.

Antique ceramics should be cleaned gently using a soft, dry cloth or lukewarm water with mild soap if necessary, avoiding harsh scrubbing or soaking to protect the glaze and transfer print.
