Delftware originated in the Netherlands during the 16th century as Dutch potters sought to emulate imported Chinese porcelain. Using local clay covered with an opaque white tin glaze and decorated in cobalt blue, Delft became a major centre of European ceramic production throughout the 17th and 18th centuries.

Antique Delft urns were crafted from earthenware clay and coated with a tin glaze containing lead and tin oxide to create an opaque white background. Artisans hand-painted designs using cobalt oxide before firing the vessel at high temperatures in a kiln.

Authentic 18th-century pieces generally exhibit slight irregularities in shape, visible brushstrokes in the blue decoration, and light reddish or yellowish earthenware showing where the glaze has worn or flaked at edges.
