Description

This jolly PAIR OF SHERWIN AND COTTON TILES of MUSICIANS date from circa 1900.

The one on the left, who looks remarkably like Danny Kaye, is holding his fiddle beneath his arm, whilst the one on the right holds some sort of wind instrument. Both look very happy.

SHERWIN AND COTTON (1877-1930) were one of the major Art Tile Manufacturers in Hanley.

The TILES are framed for ease of display.

This pair of Victorian decorative plaques consists of Sherwin and Cotton glazed earthenware ceramic tiles dating from circa 1900, supplied in warm brown wooden frames with distinct burl patterns and mitred corners. Each rectangular tile displays a sepia monochrome relief portrait of a musician in profile, finished with a high-gloss glaze that reflects light across the moulded surfaces, and each is supported upright by two small white plastic feet. The piece on the left depicts a grinning man holding a fiddle beneath his arm alongside a top hat, while the companion tile shows a smiling figure wearing a soft cap and glasses while holding a wind instrument. Each framed plaque measures 23.5 cm high, 18.5 cm wide, and 2 cm deep.
