Description

This jolly PAIR OF SHERWIN AND COTTON TILES of MUSICIANS date from circa 1900.

The one on the left, who looks remarkably like Danny Kaye, is holding his fiddle beneath his arm, whilst the one on the right holds some sort of wind instrument. Both look very happy.

SHERWIN AND COTTON (1877-1930) were one of the major Art Tile Manufacturers in Hanley.

The TILES are framed for ease of display.

Manufactured in Staffordshire around the turn of the twentieth century, these tiles utilised a specialized moulding and glaze process to create detailed, three-dimensional monochromatic portraits in ceramic.

They were made using pressed earthenware clay featuring deep relief moulding, which was then coated in a translucent coloured glaze where varying depths created tone and contrast.
