FAQs

The Aesthetic Movement, prominent in the late 19th century, prioritised art for arts sake, often featuring ebonised surfaces, gilded highlights, and stylistic influences from Japanese art and design.

These pieces typically utilised dense hardwoods like mahogany or walnut that were ebonised to resemble Japanese lacquer, often accented with hand-gilt details, delicate spindle galleries, and brass castors.

Authenticity is indicated by period-correct construction methods such as hand-cut joinery, genuine ebonisation rather than modern paint, patination consistent with age, and occasional maker marks or stamps from renowned firms like Gillows.

An ebonised table anchors a space with dark, graphic lines; pair it with minimalist seating, neutral textiles, or organic textures to let the historic craftsmanship stand out.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry, soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that can degrade the ebonisation, and keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and drastic humidity fluctuations.
