Burr walnut is a highly figured wood veneer harvested from the wart-like growth on walnut trees, prized for its intricate swirling patterns. It gained immense popularity during the late 17th century in the William and Mary period and saw a major revival during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Authentic period tables typically feature solid secondary timbers such as oak or pine, covered with finely cut walnut veneers applied with animal protein glues. Joinery methods often include dovetailing for drawer construction and traditional mortise and tenon joints for the frame.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural variations in the grain without repeating patterns found in modern laminates, alongside historical indicators such as hand-cut dovetails, oxidized brass hardware, and age-related patina or shrinkage cracks in the wood.

An antique walnut table adds warmth and textural contrast to modern spaces when paired with minimalist upholstery or sleek metallic accents. It functions effectively as a lamp table, bedside stand, or freestanding decorative surface.

Preserve antique walnut by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent the veneer from drying and lifting. Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally applying natural beeswax.
