Description

A fine quality early 19th century (circa 1810) French Empire mahogany gueridon table with carved swan decoration to the base.

This table consists of an original circular black fossil marble top with moulded edge with a figured mahogany frieze below with moulded edge.

The mahogany tri-form base consisting of superb curl mahogany concave sides supported by three finely carved swans to each corner leading down to a mahogany tri-form concave plinth with turned feet and brass castors.

The swan is symbolic of grace, beauty, love and fidelity, an elegant bird associated with femininity, it is often found featuring in French Empire (1804-1815) furniture.

The swan symbol was particularly associated with Napoleons’ wife, Josephine, and was present in their first home and featured on various furniture and furnishings including their bed.

The swan introduced the theme of ‘wings’ and was used before the eagle symbol, the wing emblem is ubiquitous in the empire period, it was a declaration of the victory of love and the beauty personified by Apollo.

In classical mythology the swan was the protector of and sacred to Apollo, also in the Greek myth ‘Leda and the Swan’ where Zeus was immortalised into a swan and then seduced Leda who bore him two children.

You will see from the last photo we also have a second very similar Empire table, the two tables are listed as a ‘near pair’ - please see separate listing or contact me directly for further details – this table can be purchased separately or as part of the pair.

This table is in very good original condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into home.
