This walnut centre coffee table dates from the Victorian period in an English Country House style. The timber displays a dark brown finish with natural grain variations, complemented by a transparent glass top plate. The design comprises a circular top, a heavy central bulbous turned pedestal column, a cruciform X-stretcher base, and four carved fluted feet with stepped bases. Deep carving decorates the wooden apron beneath the glass, which is in good condition for its age. The table measures 43 cm high, 85 cm wide, and 85 cm deep. Suitable as a coffee table in a living room, sitting room, or snug, the piece provides a sturdy surface for drinks, books, or decorative objects while displaying the natural beauty of the walnut timber. The low profile and compact footprint suit placement before a sofa or armchair, allowing the intricate carvings of the base to remain visible from multiple angles within the room.

FAQs

A centre table is a substantial circular or octagonal table originally designed to sit in the middle of a grand room or entrance hall. Historically prominent during the 19th century, these pieces feature decorative turned pedestals and heavy bases intended to be viewed from all angles.

Carved walnut tables typically feature solid walnut framing, turned central balusters, and hand-carved legs or plinths. Veneered burr or figured walnut is often applied to the tabletop to create distinctive grain patterns, with glass tops sometimes added for modern protection.

Authentic Victorian and 19th-century walnut tables exhibit hand-carved detailing, hand-cut joinery underneath the apron, and natural surface patination. Look for wear consistent with age on the lower pedestal, solid timber balusters, and historic construction marks beneath the top frame.

A low walnut table functions as a central coffee table situated within a main seating arrangement. Placing the dark timber over a neutral, light-coloured rug provides visual contrast while maintaining balance within a modern scheme.

Keep the walnut surface free from dust using a dry microfibre cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year along the grain. Glass surfaces should be cleaned independently to prevent liquids from reaching the underlying timber.
