Nineteenth-century writing tables are characterised by functional surfaces designed for correspondence, often featuring pedestals or trestle bases, and fine timber veneers developed during the Victorian era.

These tables were typically constructed from solid secondary woods like mahogany or pine, overlaid with decorative exotic veneers such as amboyna, burr walnut, or rosewood, and frequently incorporated leather writing inserts.

Authenticity is determined by hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional polish finishes such as shellac or french polish, timber shrinkage patterns, and the characteristic figuring of period veneers.

An antique writing table can serve as a focal point in a study or living space, contrasted against minimalist contemporary seating and modern lighting to highlight its historical craftsmanship.

Preserve the finish by keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying a microcrystalline wax to protect the vintage surface.
