Black Forest Carved Wood Inkwell in the Form of a Cat

1900 - 1920
Description

A charming and unusual Black Forest carved wood inkwell in the form of a cat. The piece is beautifully and realistically carved in linden wood with the cat rising over a basket formed to take quills. The inkwell is hidden within the cat’s head and lifts at the neck, the glass eyes are the original. The inkwell liner is the original and in good condition and never seems to have had a lid. The piece has a good worn colour and patina. There has been some restoration to the ears and at the front of the base of the lid. The whole has a great look and is a fine and unusual example of Black Forest carving. C.1900.
