In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

French giltwood furniture is characterised by the application of gold leaf or powder onto a prepared gesso and wood base, typically featuring ornate hand-carved floral, acanthus, or classical motifs that reflect the opulence of royal French design traditions.

These tables are traditionally constructed from hardwoods such as oak or pine, intricately carved, and covered with thin sheets of gold leaf over a chalk and glue ground layer. Insets of heavy marble, such as marble or breccia, are fitted into the top surface.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved detailing with subtle irregularities, traditional gesso application, age-related oxidation of the gold leaf, and natural wear patterns on high-contact areas, alongside period-appropriate joinery.

Pairing an ornate gilded table with minimalist or modern architecture creates a striking juxtaposition, allowing the historical craftsmanship to serve as a focal point without overwhelming the space.

Giltwood requires delicate care, using only a dry, soft feather duster or microfiber cloth to remove dust. Moisture, chemical cleaning agents, and direct sunlight must be strictly avoided to prevent stripping the fragile gold leaf.
