Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries where they were used in dining halls, known as refectories, and were designed to be long and narrow to accommodate large communal gatherings.

These tables are traditionally constructed from dense hardwoods like oak, elm, or yew, featuring thick plank tops joined with pegged mortise and tenon joints and sturdy stretcher bases for stability.

Authentic period pieces typically exhibit hand-cut jointing, natural timber shrinkage, historic tool marks, and appropriate surface oxidisation, whereas reproductions often display uniform machine milling and modern fixings.

Pairing a heavy wooden table with contemporary minimalist seating or industrial lighting creates a balanced contrast between historical weight and modern clean lines.

Maintain the timber by avoiding direct heat sources, using coasters and placemats, and periodically nourishing the surface with natural beeswax rather than silicone polishes.
