Salt glaze is created by throwing common salt into the kiln during the high-temperature firing process, reacting with the silica in the clay to produce a vitreous, pebble-textured surface. While developed centuries earlier, large-scale production of architectural and utilitarian salt-glazed ceramics flourished during the 19th century.

These items were typically thrown or moulded from heavy-bodied local clays, often featuring applied moulded reliefs such as wreaths or classical motifs, and finished with characteristic salt glazes that produced distinctive orange-peel textures.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate weight, characteristic surface pitting resembling an orange peel, genuine age-related wear to the base, and hand-finished details that differ from modern mass-produced ceramics.

An antique pedestal serves as a striking architectural element when used to display modern sculpture, large floral arrangements, or contemporary art pieces, creating a deliberate juxtaposition of eras.

Historic earthenware should be cleaned gently using a soft, dry cloth or a slightly damp microfibre cloth without harsh chemical detergents, avoiding excessive moisture due to the porous nature of underlying unglazed clays.
