Irish bog oak is sub-fossilised oak recovered from peat bogs in Ireland, which turns a deep black or dark brown colour over centuries. It was extensively used during the Victorian era for carving intricate souvenirs, jewellery, and decorative desk objects.

Traditional magnifying glasses from the nineteenth century typically feature hand-turned wooden or bone handles, brass or bronze mounts, and optical-grade glass lenses fixed in metal bezels.

Authentic bog oak items generally exhibit a dense, heavy feel, a characteristic dark matte finish, and hand-carved detailing such as shamrocks or foliage. Under magnification, natural wood grain may still be faintly visible despite the mineral staining from the bog.

An antique magnifying glass can be placed flat on a stack of coffee table books, a leather-topped desk, or a sideboard to add texture, historic character, and a functional focal point to a vignette.

Bog oak should be kept away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent splitting, and cleaned only with a soft, dry cloth. Brass elements can be gently dusted, leaving the natural aged patina intact.
