French parquetry involves arranging small geometric veneers of wood onto a substrate, a technique heavily refined by master cabinetmakers in 18th-century Paris during the Louis XV and Louis XVI periods to create intricate, durable surface patterns.

These pieces typically utilise a sturdy hardwood carcass like oak or beech, overlaid with exotic veneer woods such as rosewood, walnut, or kingwood, assembled with traditional joinery and reinforced with cast brass mounts.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the hand-cut dovetail joints, the type of secondary woods used beneath the veneers, hand-chiselled bronze or brass mounts, and natural signs of age such as oxidation and shrinkage cracks in the timber.

They function effectively as versatile occasional surfaces; separating the tables allows them to be distributed around a seating area to hold lamps or decorative objects, while nesting them together saves space without sacrificing texture and pattern.

Preservation requires keeping the furniture out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent the glue beneath the parquetry veneer from drying out, cleaning only with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax.
