FAQs

The Gothic Revival movement, prominent during the 19th century, drew inspiration from medieval architecture and design, incorporating characteristic pointed arches, heavy woods, and ornate metalwork into domestic furnishings.

These items were typically crafted from dense native timbers such as oak or walnut, often featuring brass hinges, decorative strapwork, and exposed joinery built to withstand daily use on study desks.

Authentic pieces usually display period-appropriate hand-cut joinery, patinated brass fittings, natural timber shrinkage, and traditional finishing methods rather than modern fixings or synthetic glues.

An antique book slide functions effectively on a study desk, a mantlepiece, or a bookshelf, serving both as a practical book support and a textural decorative object that grounds modern spaces.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent cracking, dusting with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood surface.
