This nineteenth-century Regency writing table is constructed from warm brown mahogany with marquetry inlay, a dark blue leather inset top, and brass handles. The rectangular piece stands on four slender tapered legs terminating in small brass castors, supporting a three-drawer frieze with decorative floral or scroll motifs on the drawer fronts and rounded corners along the top edge. The structure measures 107 cm in width, 62 cm in depth, and 74 cm in height, with a knee hole height of 61 cm. It serves functionally as a desk, dressing table, or side table in a study, library, or bedroom, providing a practical writing surface and enclosed drawer storage within a traditional domestic interior.

FAQs

Writing tables from the 19th century frequently combined classic Neoclassical proportions with refined marquetry or satinwood inlay work. They typically feature smooth leather writing surfaces, frieze drawers for stationery storage, and elegant tapered or turned legs.

These tables were constructed primarily from solid mahogany and fine mahogany veneers, often decorated with floral or geometric marquetry using contrasting timber like satinwood or boxwood. The writing tops were inlaid with gilded or blind-tooled leather, complemented by cast brass handles and brass castors.

Look for signs of genuine hand-craftsmanship, such as hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, original brass lock mechanisms, and uneven natural oxidisation on the timber underside. Genuine antique pieces will show subtle age-related wear, light cracking or patina on the leather surface, and authentic castors attached to the feet.

An antique writing table serves as a sophisticated focal point in a contemporary home office, modern bedroom alcove, or wide hallway. Contrast the rich mahogany tones by pairing the table with a sleek modern chair, minimalist lighting, and curated ceramic accessories.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent wood warping and veneer lifting. Nourish the mahogany using high-quality beeswax applied sparingly along the grain, and clean the leather top gently with a dry, soft cloth, applying a specialist leather conditioner periodically.
