Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pole screen is a piece of fireside furniture popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, consisting of an adjustable shield mounted on a vertical rod. Designed to protect faces from the intense heat of open hearth fires, they often displayed decorative needlework or painted panels.

Traditional pole screens were crafted using woods such as mahogany, rosewood, or ebonised timber, mounted on turned pedestals with tripod bases. The decorative panels frequently featured needlepoint embroidery, lacquer work, painted landscapes, or papier-mache.

Authentic Victorian examples typically feature brass adjustment mechanisms or threaded wooden collars, turned central pillars, and stable triform or tripod bases. Look for original joinery, age-appropriate wear to the base, and period decorative techniques on the panel.

Place a pole screen near a fireplace, beside an armchair, or in a quiet reading corner as a sculptural decorative accent. Its slender vertical profile allows it to add visual height and historical interest to modern living spaces.

Dust the frame and panel regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical polishes or water on painted surfaces. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent cracking of the paint and lacquer finish.
