A waywiser, also known as a surveying wheel or perambulator, is a historical instrument used by surveyors, cartographers, and land-owners to measure distances by rolling a wheel of a known circumference along the ground.

Traditional waywisers were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut for the frame and spoked wheel, often reinforced with iron or brass tyres, and fitted with brass clockwork dials and pointers.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate hand-joinery, genuine patina on the brass and wood components, hand-engraved or early printed dial faces, and mechanical wear consistent with genuine historical field use rather than modern reproduction.

Such scientific instruments lend themselves well to study, library, or hallway displays, where they can be mounted securely on a wall or placed in a corner to serve as an architectural focal point celebrating historic engineering.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels to prevent wood cracking or brass corrosion, dusting gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoiding chemical polishes that can strip natural historic patina.
