We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries, where they were used by monks for communal dining in the refectory. Their long, narrow proportions were designed to accommodate large groups in communal halls.

These tables are traditionally constructed from heavy hardwoods, most commonly English or European oak, joined using pegged mortise and tenon joints. A long central stretcher often runs horizontally between the trestle base supports to provide structural stability.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-planed surface textures, natural timber shrinkage, and accumulated patination from centuries of use. Examination of the underside and peg construction often reveals the age of the woodwork.

Pairing a substantial wooden table with contemporary minimalist seating creates a striking juxtaposition of styles. Keeping the surface largely unadorned allows the natural timber grain and historical character to act as a focal point.

Preserve the finish by avoiding direct sunlight and maintaining stable indoor humidity to prevent wood splitting. Clean periodically with a soft, dry cloth and nourish the timber using traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
