During the 19th century, folding fans served as both fashionable accessories and subtle tools of communication in polite society, often featuring hand-painted pastoral scenes or lithographs reflecting the romantic tastes of the period.

Antique folding fans were typically constructed using delicate materials such as paper, silk, or vellum for the leaf, supported by sticks and guards carved from tortoiseshell, bone, mother-of-pearl, or ivory.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-painted detailing, natural ageing on the paper or silk leaf, traditional riveting at the base, and organic variations in materials like genuine tortoiseshell or carved bone.

An antique folding fan can be mounted in a bespoke shadow box frame and displayed on a wall, or placed flat inside a shallow glass-topped table to protect the fragile paper from dust and handling.

To preserve antique fans, keep them away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent the paper from yellowing and the organic sticks from warping or cracking.
