Traditional Chinese tables crafted from dense hardwoods like padauk or zitan have a long lineage dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties, historically used for displaying art, ceramics, or serving tea.

These items are typically constructed from dense, durable exotic hardwoods utilising traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery without metal nails, often featuring hand-carved floral motifs and inset marble panels.

Authenticity is determined by examining the weight and grain of the dense timber, the hand-carved detailing, traditional joinery methods, and natural patina accumulated over decades or centuries.

Such a piece works effectively as an accent table or display stand, pairing well with minimalist contemporary decor to highlight its intricate carvings and rich wood tones as a focal point.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, cleaning with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying appropriate natural waxes to maintain the finish.
