FAQs

French marquetry during the 19th century revived earlier decorative techniques, notably inspired by Louis XIV and Louis XV styles, incorporating intricate wood veneers to create pictorial or geometric designs on furniture surfaces.

These tables typically feature a carcase of secondary wood veneered with exotic and native hardwoods such as walnut, burl, and fruitwood, cut precisely and assembled by hand before being polished with shellac.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut veneer work with minor natural variations, traditional joinery methods appropriate to the period, and cast bronze or brass mounts secured with old fixings rather than modern screws.

An antique marquetry table adds textural contrast and historical depth when used as a focal point against neutral walls, pairing well with contemporary minimalist seating to highlight its intricate craftsmanship.

Maintain antique wood furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, applying quality beeswax periodically, and avoiding chemical cleaners or excessive moisture.
