Description

A superb set of antique mahogany and leather library steps in the Georgian style. They were made in England, and date from around the 1900-1920 period.

The quality is fantastic, they are very useful for reaching high shelves, and also make great side tables / decorative items. The mahogany frame is finely constructed, and the steps have inset tooled leather surfaces.

We have had these recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for their age. The mahogany has a wonderful patina with some minor marks and bumps remaining under the polish here and there, commensurate for age.

Library steps evolved significantly during the Georgian and Victorian periods as private collections expanded upwards, requiring specialized furniture to reach high shelves safely and elegantly.

Traditional library steps were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, frequently featuring leather treads with gilt tooling and turned brass finials.

Authenticity is identified through traditional joinery methods, timber shrinkage patterns, hand-tooled leather inserts, and genuine wear consistent with age and use.

These pieces can be utilized functionally in a study or positioned as decorative stands for plants and display objects within a traditional living space.

Preservation involves applying microcrystalline wax to the wooden elements and treating the leather inserts with specialized conditioners to prevent drying and cracking.
