Early 20th Century English Jigger Doll

1900 - 1920
Description

Early 20th Century English Folk Art Jigger Doll

A great example of an early 20th century English hand carved folk art articulated jigger doll. With charming hand carved boots, moustache and top hat, metal pins in its joints for articulation purposes. Stood on a metal wire stand for display purposes only. With its pine back support still in place which would have once had a stick placed in it so it could dance.

Jig dolls are traditional wooden or tin-plate toys for adults or children. They are dolls with loose limbs that step dance or 'jig' on the end of a vibrating board or platform in imitation of a real step dancer. In London they were frequently operated by street entertainers or buskers. In England old soldiers from the Great war sometimes busked with them to supplement their meagre war pensions

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A jigger doll, also known as a limberjack or paddle doll, is a traditional jointed wooden toy designed to dance or vibrate on a wooden plank when tapped in rhythm with music.

These figures were hand-carved from softwoods, featuring loose, pin-jointed limbs at the hips and knees, and were finished with simple painted details to represent specific characters.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural wear around the joint pins, hand-carved tool marks, wire joinery, and patinated hand-painted finishes consistent with age.

Displaying folk art figures on custom stands or mounting them within glass display cases on a bookshelf or mantelpiece highlights their sculptural qualities within contemporary settings.

Keep painted wooden items away from direct sunlight and humidity, dusting them lightly with a soft, dry brush without using harsh liquid cleaners or wax pastes.
