Description

Just one of the best small 19thc oak staved and ash bound lidded flour barrels I have bought...it is just the right size to be used as a biscuit barrel , originally used for flour in the large country kitchen, it is in very good condition with all the staves still tight and it has gained a very good colour, that ash and oak go with lots of domestic use....no breaks or repairs.

English. C1860-80.

Staved wooden containers were traditionally crafted by coopers using curved wooden staves held together by bands of wood or metal, serving as essential utility items for storing dry goods like flour, salt, and grain in domestic households and farmhouses.

These pieces were typically constructed from domestic hardwoods such as oak for the staves and ash for the steam-bent binding bands, joined with wooden pegs or handmade iron fixings without modern adhesives.

Authentic items display period-correct tool marks, hand-carved staves, genuine patina, and age-related wear on the timber, alongside traditional cooperage techniques predating mass-produced manufacturing.

Such textural pieces add warmth and historical contrast when placed on open shelving, countertops, or floors in rustic and transitional interiors, functioning both as sculptural accents and functional storage.

Preserve the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources and fluctuating moisture levels, occasionally feeding the dry wood with a natural beeswax or microcrystalline wax to maintain the surface finish.
