FAQs

A Victorian centre table is a freestanding piece of furniture designed to be viewed from all sides, typically placed in the middle of a grand Victorian parlour or drawing room. Burr walnut became immensely popular during the 19th century due to its highly figured, swirling grain patterns.

These tables are traditionally constructed using a softwood or mahogany carcass veneered with thin slices of burr walnut to showcase the intricate grain. The pedestals and bases often feature solid walnut components with hand-carved decorative motifs.

Authentic Victorian pieces often display period-appropriate construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetails, older secondary woods, and traditional French polish finishes. Look for natural ageing, slight imperfections in the hand-cut veneer, and dense, heavy timbers rather than modern manufactured boards.

Pair this piece with minimalist contemporary seating to create a striking contrast between old and new. It can serve as a dramatic focal point in an entryway or living space when styled simply with a single ceramic vase or kept bare to highlight the wood grain.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the veneer from drying out and cracking. Maintain the finish by occasionally applying a quality beeswax and buffing gently with a soft, lint-free cloth.
