Kurdish Bag Cushion, Circa 1880, 50cm X 50cm

19th century
Description

This charming cushion was produced by the talented Jaf weavers, a sub-tribe of the Kurds. Jaf bags are among the most appealing and recognisable of Persian tribal weavings of the 19th century. In the best examples, the exceptional wool quality and fine saturated dyes have survived the generations well resulting in jewel-like weavings with glossy wool and glowing colours. Originally made as a utility bag, this lovely piece has been adapted into a cushion and is a fine example with a velvety texture and edible colours. The design is the ubiquitous repeat diamond lattice seen on the vast majority of Jaf bags, but it is augmented by its unusual borders. In addition the original kilim back of the bag has survived along with the original piled and soumac end panels. It is a lovely little object, both collectible and decorative, which would work well as a delightful furnishing item in all kinds of settings. Very good original condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Kurdish bag cushion is crafted from a traditional nomadic storage bag face, known as a khorjin or mafrash, produced by Kurdish weavers in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

These textiles were hand-spun using hand-dyed wool for both the pile face and structural foundation, incorporating natural dyes derived from madder, indigo, and plant sources.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun wool construction, natural dye variation known as abrash, irregular geometric motifs unique to specific weaving tribes, and heavy wear consistent with age.

Position the piece as a textural accent on neutral leather armchairs, contemporary linen sofas, or deep window seats to introduce geometric pattern and historical character.

Vacuum gently using suction only without a rotating brush bar, spot clean with cold water and wool-safe detergent, and position away from prolonged direct sunlight to prevent dye fading.
