Antique Octagonal Teapot By Thomas Harley, Staffordshire, C. 1805. Rare

Antique creamware teapot with swan on cover, circa 1805. The material is lead-glazed earthenware. The teapot of unique form, octagonal, with diagonal spout and C-shaped handle, hand painted with floral compositions. The cover with a charming swan finial on the top. Molded acanthus leaves to base of pot and spout and decorative moldings to the raised teapot rim. The piece decorated with puce and green scattered sprigs beneath an iron-red band reserved with rosebuds and scattered flowers and sprigs. Very nice looking early 19th century English pottery teapot with pearlware glaze and swan finial. Two similar Thomas Harley lead glazed earthenware teapots with swan finials are held in the national collection at the V & A Museum. Thomas Harley (1778-1832), a manufacturer at Lane End (a district of Stoke-on-Trent incorporated with Longton, Staffordshire, in 1865), produced some good earthenware services, jugs and other articles during the period 1805-1812. From 1799-1801 he was in partnership with John, George and William Weston. From 1801 he worked on his own as an enameller, black printer and earthenware manufacturer. He was in partnership with Seckerson in 1818. Also he owned a pot works in St. Helens (Lancashire) and a shop in Dublin.
 
Dimensions : Height 15 cm, width 23.5 cm, depth 10 cm. Weight 426 grams
 
Condition : A few small chips on the edges of the lid, chips on the edge of the spout. Small paint loss due to age.
 
Otherwise excellent antique condition - no cracks or signs of restoration.
