FAQs

French farmhouse tables were traditionally used as the central workspace and gathering place in rural households. Crafted from durable local timbers such as elm or oak, these tables were built to withstand daily domestic labour and communal dining.

These tables are constructed using solid regional hardwoods like elm and fruitwoods, joined with traditional pegged mortise-and-tenon construction. The tops typically consist of thick planks secured with sturdy stretcher bases for maximum structural stability.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural patination, hand-planed board surfaces, and irregular wear consistent with age and use. Examination of the underside often reveals handmade wooden pegs, hand-cut joinery, and natural shrinkage gaps between the top planks.

Pairing a rustic wooden table with modern seating creates a balanced interior scheme that highlights the natural grain and texture of the wood. Contrast the heavy proportions with minimalist lighting and simple tableware to let the historic character remain the focal point.

Maintain antique elm by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and avoiding silicone-based polishes or excessive moisture. Protect the surface from heat and direct sunlight by using coasters and placemats, applying occasional natural beeswax to nourish the timber.
