18 Vols the Sporting Magazine 1792-1801 J. Wheble London

18th century
Description

‘Interesting to the Man of Pleasure and Enterprise’ these 18 VOLUMES of The SPORTING MAGAZINE or MONTHLY CALENDAR OF THE TRANSACTIONS OF THE TURF, THE CHACE AND EVERY OTHER DIVERSION date from October 1792 - December 1801. Printed for the Proprietor and Sold by J. Wheble, No18 Warwick Square, Warwick Lane, near St. Paul’s.

The Books have marbled boards, leather spines and leather corner tips.

As can be seen from the photographs some of the leather titles are not apparent. We have six of them, which need refixing . Three are lost.

There is the obvious wear to the Books like some staining, folding, creasing and foxing but, overall, it is a good set. One board is unattached and there are a very few pages loose in one volume.

The broad spectrum of the topics covered is capable of providing interest to anyone. There are notes on Theatre productions, Court Cases, Legislation, Country mishaps and, as the title would suggest, Sporting adventures.

The Books measure 8.25 inches (21 cm) by 5.25 inches (13.5 cm).

Many of the illustrations purvey the charm of the Georgian Engraver.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian bookbindings from the late eighteenth century frequently utilized full or half calfskin leather, complete with raised spine bands, hand-stamped gilded lettering, and contrasting morocco leather spine labels.

Volumes from this era were constructed using rag paper handmade from linen or cotton fibres, bound in tanned calfskin or goat leather, and sewn with flax thread onto cords.

Authentic volumes display uneven rag paper margins, chain lines and watermarks visible when held to light, hand-tooled gilt details, period publisher imprints, and natural age-related patination or oxidisation to the leather.

Antique volumes can be styled in groups on open shelving, stacked horizontally on side tables as decorative bases, or arranged within alcove bookcases to add texture and depth to a contemporary room scheme.

Store volumes upright in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, maintain stable humidity levels to prevent leather desiccating, and handle spines gently without pulling from the headband.
