Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the nineteenth century, folding hand fans were both functional cooling devices and essential social props. Printed and hand-coloured paper leaves depicting pastoral scenes or historical events were widely produced in Europe, often mounted on decorative sticks made of bone, mother of pearl, or wood.

These fans typically feature a leaf made from heavy paper, silk, or vellum, attached to sticks crafted from carved bone, tortoiseshell, wood, or mother of pearl. Modern display cases, such as custom fan-shaped frames, often utilise gilt wood moulding and protective glass to preserve the delicate materials.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of period craftsmanship, including hand-coloured lithography, precise pleating, and finely pierced or gilded sticks. Wear along the fold lines, minor age spots on the paper, and period-appropriate rivet materials at the pivot point also help confirm age.

A framed fan serves as a distinctive piece of architectural wall decor when hung above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or in a gallery wall arrangement. Its unique curvilinear silhouette provides visual contrast against linear furniture pieces and adds historical texture to a room.

Keep the framed fan out of direct sunlight and high-humidity areas to prevent fading and paper degradation. Ensure the glazing is kept clean using a dry microfibre cloth, and verify that the backing materials are acid-free to prevent discoloration over time.
