Description

This antique oak coaching table is English and harks back to a time when horse-drawn coaches were the main form of transport. Space was at a premium but wealthier passengers still expected the comforts of home, so tables were designed with this in mind. This example, with its mellow tones, simple outline, and ingenious space-saving design would also make it a perfect choice if you are looking for an occasional or lamp table for a contemporary and period interior. Whilst it was being restored, we made every effort to retain the original surface, colour, and character of this charming table.

Dealers Notes

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. However, we understand that it is not always possible to judge from photographs how an item will look in the home or garden. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Coaching tables and campaign furniture originated as portable items designed for easy transport by travellers, officers, and nobility during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Authentic period pieces were typically constructed from durable hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, often featuring brass hinges and folding X-frame mechanisms.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate joinery, hand-turned wooden components, natural patina, and period fastening hardware rather than modern screws.

These versatile pieces function effectively as flexible accent surfaces or bedside tables, offering functional historic character in compact living areas.

Preservation requires regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional application of traditional beeswax to maintain the timber finish without stripping the historic patina.
