A large 19th century Italian faience plaque, painted in colours with a scene of solidiers and a peasant girl in a landscape, signed C. RAVIER to the bottom left, within an oak frame.

NOTE: Although the plaque is cracked through the centre - it appears to be glazed around the edges of the cracks which would suggest this happened during the production of this large piece.

Faience refers to tin-glazed earthenware decorated with metal oxides before firing. Originating from techniques refined during the Italian Renaissance under the term majolica, nineteenth-century revivalists continued producing decorative figurative plaques depicting classical and historical scenes.
